A Glimpse from the Past...
A recognition of the pressing need for a knowledge of Hammond registration has led Butler University's Jordan College of Music in Indianapolis, Indiana , to take three momentous steps. The first of these was the hiring of Mr. Harold Leamon, outstanding pianist, accompanist, and Hammond Organist, as a member of the faculty. The second was the acquisition of two new Hammond Organs for practice and study purposes. The third was the revision of the four year curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Music Degree in Organ so that a semester of Hammond Organ could be included, and the setting up of a special two-year course of study for the Hammond Organ. Mallory Bransford, Dean of the Indiana Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and Chairman of the Organ Department at Jordan says, "Our organ majors who go out into the field have to know Hammond registration. They will be required to play Hammond Organs wherever they go. It is, therefore, natural and desirable that we provide the type of training that will ensure their overall success as performers and teachers." Dean J. K. Ehlert, himself an organist, has been personally interested in the new two-year course for the Hammond. "There are many persons with piano background," he says, "who, due to the geat shortage of organists in this country, are called upon to play the Hammond Organ in their churches, lodges, or clubs. We know that these persons need a packaged course of study which will prepare them to do an adequate job short of the extended traditional curriculum for the full-fledged organ major. We believe we have worked out an answer to this problem in our new two-year Hammond study program." Hammond TIMES - June, 1954 - Vol. XVI, No. 14. published by Hammond Organ Co., 4202 W.
